JR
What is that creature you have with you?

TRAMP
A creature? Where exactly?

MR HARLSBURY
My son refers, I think, to the rotting carcass which hangs around your neck, generating such a distinctive aroma.

The Tramp puts down his fork and fondles the rat with the grubby forefingers of his left hand.

TRAMP
This? Why it represents the gradual disintegration of the mind.

JR.
I’m sorry...?

TRAMP
It’s symbolic of humanity’s steady progression towards insanity; neurological oblivion if you like. It was a present from my cousin.

JR.
I don’t...

TRAMP
He lives in Munich.

JR.
I...

MR HARLSBURY
We see. And what profession are you in, sir?

An extract from my screenplay. Commercial, no?

I was told when I first moved to screenwriting that new writers have a tendency to write about their own lives (in some manner) in their first screenplay. I think part of the art of being commercially successful may be to find ways to translate those elements to bigger, broader contexts that are topical and exciting.
